The main drivers for climate change are what are known as &#8220;<strong>Greenhouse Gases<\/strong>&#8221; (GHG). These are gases that are present in the atmosphere that trap the heat from the sun in the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<sup data-fn=\"c6743476-e93b-46d4-a9f0-9e64e619a74d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c6743476-e93b-46d4-a9f0-9e64e619a74d\" id=\"c6743476-e93b-46d4-a9f0-9e64e619a74d-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>. Heat gets trapped through a process called the <strong>Greenhouse Effect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image \">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized eplus-wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"733\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/whatdoesclimatechangemeanforyou.opened.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10194\/2026\/03\/greenhouse-gases-in-atmosphere.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-158\" style=\"width:567px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/~vjd1\/greenhouse.htm\">The Greenhouse Effect<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">GHGs have always been in the atmosphere and are a crucial part of sustaining life on Earth. <strong>With the help of GHGs<\/strong>, the average temperature on Earth comes to about <strong>15\u00b0C<\/strong>. Without these gases, the average temperature on Earth would <strong>drop to -18\u00b0C<\/strong>, and most of Earth would be frozen!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:75px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\" wp-block-spacer eplus-wrapper\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">Important Greenhouse Gases<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">GHGs in our atmosphere mainly consist of <strong>Carbon Dioxide<\/strong> (CO\u2082), <strong>Methane<\/strong> (CH\u2084), and <strong>Nitrous Oxide <\/strong>(N\u2082O). As seen in figure 1, there are <strong>seven GHGs<\/strong> that are currently being tracked. In this diagram, the <strong>Oxygen <\/strong>atoms are red, <strong>Hydrogen <\/strong>atoms are white, <strong>Nitrogen <\/strong>atoms are blue, and <strong>Carbon <\/strong>atoms are black\/grey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Look through each molecule and see if you can find the ones we haven&#8217;t covered yet. greenhouse gases like a blanket,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:27<br>they wrap around our planet, keeping it warm,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:30<br>so that we can live on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:31<br>Hmm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:32<br>But hear me out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:34<br>You&#8217;ve heard of Goldilocks, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:35<br>It can&#8217;t be too hot or too cold,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:38<br>the conditions have to be just right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:42<br>Because of human activities in the last century,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:45<br>there are more greenhouse gases being<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:47<br>released into the atmosphere, disrupting the balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:50<br>And that means more heat is getting trapped near<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:53<br>the Earth&#8217;s surface, causing temperatures to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">0:57<br>And yes, you guessed it, the unusual increase of<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:00<br>the Earth&#8217;s surface temperature is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:02<br>called global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Types of greenhouse gases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:05<br>So, what exactly are the greenhouse gases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:07<br>in the atmosphere anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:09<br>Well, let&#8217;s break down five main types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:12<br>First, carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:15<br>It&#8217;s the greenhouse gas with the biggest total<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:17<br>impact on climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:19<br>Most of the CO2 in the atmosphere has come<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:22<br>from burning fossil fuels,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:24<br>so coal, gas and oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:27<br>And then we have methane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:28<br>It&#8217;s released when fossil fuels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:30<br>are extracted from the Earth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:32<br>it&#8217;s also released by livestock, like cows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:37<br>Next up is nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:39<br>This gas can be released during industrial<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:41<br>activities and from burning fossil fuels<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:44<br>or solid waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:45<br>Then we&#8217;ve got fluorinated gases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:47<br>There are different kinds, but the ones you might be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:50<br>most familiar with are in your fridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:52<br>It&#8217;s used to keep things cool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:55<br>And finally, water vapour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">1:57<br>Okay, water vapour isn&#8217;t the main cause of global warming,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:00<br>but it is an effect and contributor to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:04<br>Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:04<br>Because of global warming<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:06<br>more water evaporates,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:08<br>so more water goes into the atmosphere,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:11<br>trapping even more heat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:12<br>near the Earth&#8217;s surface, and the cycle continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:16<br>Depending on the type, greenhouse gases can stay<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:19<br>in the atmosphere for a few years<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:21<br>or even for thousands of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Effects of greenhouse gases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:24<br>You&#8217;re probably wondering,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:26<br>&#8220;What are some of the effects of these greenhouse gases?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:29<br>Well, when the Earth&#8217;s temperature rises,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:31<br>that can cause more frequent and intense heat waves,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:34<br>droughts, and floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">2:36<br>The extra CO2 is also changing the ocean&#8217;s chemistry,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-styles-uid-c509d1\"><\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Water vapour is actually more abundant in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide! <sup data-fn=\"ab89e894-a165-4dc5-a786-7f8aa442d25a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ab89e894-a165-4dc5-a786-7f8aa442d25a\" id=\"ab89e894-a165-4dc5-a786-7f8aa442d25a-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> Think of the <strong>water cycle<\/strong>, throughout this cycle, lots of water ends up in the atmosphere through <strong>evaporation<\/strong>. Instead, water vapour is a byproduct of increases of other Greenhouse Gases! As levels of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and other GHGs increase, the temperature of the atmosphere increases as well. Because warmer air can actually carry more water vapour!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The way this process contributes to warming temperatures is because water vapour absorbs heat that is trying to escape back out to space. This heat then gets stuck in the atmosphere, warming the planet. Since this process ends up warming the Earth, it further increases how much water vapour the atmosphere can carry. This phenomenon is known as a &#8220;<strong>Positive Feedback Loop<\/strong>&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">Ozone<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\"> While often associated with the &#8220;Ozone Hole&#8221; and protection from UV radiation, ozone plays a dual role in our atmosphere depending on where it is located. <sup data-fn=\"f2dd6a32-8f69-4421-915a-1fed1f8c5735\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f2dd6a32-8f69-4421-915a-1fed1f8c5735\" id=\"f2dd6a32-8f69-4421-915a-1fed1f8c5735-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> In the context of climate change, it is important to understand how ozone acts as both a protector and a greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Ozone is a gas composed of three oxygen atoms. Without this layer, many ecosystems would collapse, and humans wouldn&#8217;t be protected from these rays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Tropospheric Ozone (&#8220;Bad&#8221; Ozone):<\/strong> Located in the lower atmosphere (where we breathe), this ozone is a human-made air pollutant. It is the primary component of &#8220;smog.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">While carbon dioxide and methane are the most discussed greenhouse gases, <strong>tropospheric ozone<\/strong> is the third most important greenhouse gas. Unlike carbon dioxide, which is emitted directly from cars and factories, tropospheric ozone is a <strong>secondary pollutant<\/strong>. It is formed when sunlight reacts with pollution from fossil fuel combustion.
